Fire gutted a section of the Rivers State Government Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt on Monday evening, damaging offices within the multi-storey building.
The inferno reportedly started on the ground floor and affected the section that houses the Rivers State Pension Board.
Preliminary reports from state officials suggest the cause of the fire may have been an electrical fault.
Dr. Honour Sirawoo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, confirmed the incident, stating that firefighters from both the state and Federal Fire Services (FFS), alongside military personnel, responded promptly to contain the flames. The State Head of Service, Dr. Iyingi Brown, later confirmed that no casualties were recorded.
The timing of the incident has generated public curiosity, as it occurred less than a week after Governor Siminalayi Fubara dissolved the State Pensions Board.
This development follows the recent political reconciliation in the oil-rich state, where Governor Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly resumed their duties on September 18, 2025, following the expiration of the six-month state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025.
