COVID-19 UPDATE: NCDC Confirms 59 New Cases As Second Wave Hits Europe

THE Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said the country recorded 59 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in Nigeria to 63,790.

Europe is however, witnessing a spike leading to some countries enforcing lockdown for the second time within the year.

NCDC on its verified Twitter handle on Saturday night, said, “On the 7th of November 2020, 59 new confirmed cases were recorded in Nigeria.

“Till date, 63,790 cases have been confirmed, 59,884 cases have been discharged and 1,154 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory

“The 59 new cases are reported from 8 states- Kaduna (28), Rivers (9), Ogun (8), Ondo (8), Kano (2), Niger (2), Kwara (1), Plateau (1)

“A multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 3, continues to coordinate the national response activities.”

A second wave of the coronavirus however, is sweeping through Europe.

The National Disease Control Center in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute, reported 23,399 new cases between Friday and Saturday bringing the total number of recorded cases in Germany to over 600,000, with 11,226 deaths recorded in the country.

On Saturday, Greece began a three-week nationwide lockdown, its second this year.

The country saw a 20 percent increase in confirmed infections in the past week, with health officials reporting 52,254 new cases and 715 deaths.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he was forced to lockdown the countrt after a spike in cases, as he warned that without a lockdown, pressure on the healthcare system would be “unbearable.”

The U.S., recorded 120,048 cases on Thursday, breaking a record set Wednesday of more than 100,000 cases in a single day.

As of Friday the U.S. had recorded 9,827,184 confirmed cases and 237,941 deaths, according to an NBC News Tally.

On Friday, President Donald Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows tested positive for Covid-19, a source familiar with the diagnosis said.

The world has recorded 50,263,740 cases of COVID-19, 1,256,352 deaths and 35,549,694.
