ANAMBRA State Ministry of Transport has embarked on decongestion of the Onitsha- Enugu Expressway by removing cannibalized and abandoned vehicles causing obstruction along the road.
Newsden gathered that the exercise which was carried out by the combined team of ATMA, Ocha Brigade and officials of the civil defense was to ensure free flow of traffic in line with operation decongest Anambra roads.
The exercise commenced along Ogbunike toll gate, Building materials market, Tarzan junction and beyond, was in line with operation decongest Anambra roads.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor Willie Obiano on Transport, Mr. Sam Odilinye, the decongestion has become imperative in view of the activities of commercial bus drivers which have result to incessant grid lock in the area.
He stressed the need to maintain free flow of traffic regretting the problems encountered by road users, and condemned the attitude of mechanics, who have converted the roads into workshop.
On his part, the General Manger, Anambra State Traffic Maintenance Agency (ATMA), Mr. Chidi Umezinwa, observed that the sanitization was to ensure law and order as well as to secure safer environment for road users.
He announced that the Ministry will not relent in addressing issues relating to violation of traffic rules disclosing that the operation decongest Anambra initiative of the Ministry, will be extended to Nkpor, Nnewi, Ekwulobia among others, warning against violation of traffic laws.
Earlier, the Secretary General, Board of Trustees, Building Materials Market, Chief Emeka Okafor who spoke on behalf of the Chairman of the market, highlighted the efforts and measures made so far to caution traffic offenders.
