The Archdiocese of Lagos has declared Sunday, June 22nd, 2025, a day of prayer for peace and in protest against the ongoing violence in Nigeria, particularly the recent massacres in Benue and Enugu States.

Archbishop Martins, in a special circular to priests and the faithful, voiced outrage at the “inhumane and barbaric” killings, condemning the attacks on vulnerable communities, including those displaced from their homes.

The circular highlights the targeting of Christians in predominantly Christian areas and expresses concern over the lack of effective response from security forces and government officials, particularly in Benue State.

The Archdiocese is calling on all parishes to hold special Masses on Sunday, June 22nd, to implore divine intervention and to condemn the violence.

Further, the faithful are encouraged to pray the Rosary throughout the day and organize processions in the evenings. The prayer initiative will not be limited to the Archdiocese of Lagos, but will serve as a unified call for action.

The statement echoes Pope Leo XIV’s recent appeal for prayer concerning the violence, demonstrating solidarity with global concerns for the safety of Nigerians.

The Archdiocese emphasizes its commitment to continued prayer and action for peace and justice in the face of the ongoing crisis.
