Describing violence such as rape as a felony, he said it is a very serious offense which if a culprit is found guilty, can attract life imprisonment.

The PPRO pointed out that failure of some victims to report such cases has remained one of the challenges the police face in prosecuting culprits.

He, however noted that with the recent advocacy carried out by the Police, Civil Society Organizations, NAWOG and Human Rights Activists, people are now becoming bold to report cases of sexual abuse.

Mr. Mohammed revealed that the police major challenge in handling rape cases is that some parents of victims go behind the door to negotiate with the culprit noting that this attitude causes a set back to prosecution of rape cases.

The PPRO called on the public to support the police by reporting issues of violence early for evidence taking, and noted that it is the moral obligation of parents to do all they can to ensure that suspects face the law.
