A massive manhunt is underway in South Africa after a group of gunmen opened fire at a tavern in Bekkersdal, near Johannesburg, early Sunday morning.
The unprovoked attack left nine people dead—seven men and two women—and another 10 injured.
Police report that approximately 12 unidentified suspects arrived in two vehicles around 01:00 local time, firing randomly into the crowd with pistols and an AK-47.
The motives remain unclear. Local officials and residents have expressed growing desperation over rising gun violence, with some leaders calling for military intervention to supplement under-resourced police forces.
