The Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, has described the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, as one of the greatest medium of national integration among Nigerians.

Onyeme gave the description on Wednesday when the Delta State Director of NYSC, Mr Alao Olusegun, led officials of the scheme to pay him a courtesy call at Government House, Asaba.

The Deputy Governor observed that most Nigerians had benefited from the NYSC scheme as through the scheme, youths were posted to different parts of the country for the purpose of national integration and unity.

“It is a very good scheme which every Nigerian youth is looking forward to participate in; in our time, we enjoyed the scheme and some of us got jobs where we served; the NYSC scheme is a very good scheme, it is a scheme that most Nigerians are proud of.

“The purpose of the scheme is not lost, and I want to say that we can keep encouraging this scheme to succeed because, apart from the integration, it makes the youths to have close relationship with Nigerians who are not from the localities.

“I will suggest that the scheme should be such that graduates are posted to serve in their areas of specialization, places where they can apply the knowledge that they acquired in school.”

Onyeme assured the NYSC officials of the state government’s readiness to continuously support the NYSC to succeed.

Earlier, Mr. Olusegun had said that the visit was to felicitate with the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and Sir Onyeme on their victory at the last election as well as list the challenges facing the NYSC in the state.

He commended the Delta State government for the support given to them.

Some of the officials of the state government who witnessed the visit include the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Johnbull Tonikari, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services and Girl Child Development, Ms Orode Uduaghan and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Sir Christopher Osakwe.
