Pope Urges Action on Migration Crisis as Spain Tour Concludes in Tenerife

Pope Leo XIV is wrapping up his official visit to Spain today with a powerful appeal for migrant aid and a fierce condemnation of human trafficking, shining a global spotlight on Europe’s escalating migration debate.

The pontiff’s final itinerary on the island of Tenerife, a key entry point for irregular arrivals into Europe—includes an emotional meeting with migrants and a massive open-air mass.

A Symbolic Final Stop

Tenerife, part of the Atlantic’s Canary Islands archipelago, has become a primary destination for tens of thousands of individuals risking everything for a better life in Europe.

The Pope’s schedule for Friday highlights the human element of this geopolitical issue:

  • Las Raices Center: The Pope will address hundreds of migrants at this former military barracks, a facility that previously drew heavy criticism for severe overcrowding.
  • Santa Cruz Port: He will celebrate a final open-air mass expected to draw tens of thousands of the faithful.

This follows his Thursday visit to neighboring Gran Canaria, which came after earlier stops in Madrid and Barcelona.

Condemning “Indifference” and “Monsters”

During his time in the archipelago, the leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics has pulled no punches regarding the perils of the Atlantic route. At the port of Arguineguin, he cast a wreath into the ocean to honor those who have perished at sea and blessed a cross fashioned from the timber of a migrant boat.

”Human dignity has no passport. Monsters lurk in these seas… traffickers who enslave women and children, and those whose indifference allows the poor to be swallowed up by exploitation or forgetfulness.”

— Pope Leo XIV

He directly challenged European nations—many of which have tightened borders amid rising pressure from far-right political factions—stating they “cannot claim to uphold human dignity while growing accustomed to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic becoming unmarked graves.”

A Perilous Journey

The Pope’s message carries immense urgency. According to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 1,200 people died or went missing attempting the crossing from Africa to the Canary Islands last year alone, cementing it as one of the deadliest migration corridors on Earth.

The visit has resonated deeply with locals and arrivals alike. “We really value this visit. It’s very important for us at such a critical moment,” said Mohamed Amjahdi, who successfully made the dangerous journey from Morocco by boat at age 17.

Pope Leo XIV will depart Tenerife for Rome later today, where he is scheduled to hold his traditional mid-flight press conference with reporters.
