Thailand Dries Up a 53-Year Dry Spell: Afternoon Alcohol Ban Lifted

In a move set to electrify Thailand’s hospitality sector, the government has officially suspended a 53-year-old ban on the retail sale of alcoholic beverages during the afternoon, effective immediately for a trial period.

The strict prohibition, which barred the sale of beer, spirits, and wine between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., was seen by many as an archaic constraint on tourism and commerce.

Its removal is intended to give a significant economic boost to convenience stores, bars, and restaurants, capitalizing on the high volume of domestic and international tourists expected for the year-end holidays.

The ban’s suspension is not yet permanent; it has been enacted on a 180-day trial basis. Following this period, the government will conduct a formal evaluation of the economic impact and public order consequences.

The new rules, formalized through an amendment published in the Royal Gazette, permit the purchase of alcoholic drinks continuously from 11 a.m. until midnight.

Patrons at registered nightlife venues can still consume until 1 a.m.

The original prohibition dates back to 1972 under military rule, and its rationale has become increasingly obscure over the decades. Despite Thailand’s majority Buddhist population—whose religion generally discourages intoxicating substances—alcohol consumption is a deeply ingrained cultural and social activity.

While the decision is lauded by industry, it comes with a strong caveat: officials had previously expressed concern that expanding the hours for legal sales could potentially worsen the persistent issue of drunk driving on Thai roads.

Historically, the ban was challenging to enforce consistently, often leading to a “gray market“ where small vendors would sell products “under the counter.”

Hotels, airports, and some entertainment venues had long benefited from exemptions, highlighting the patchy nature of the regulation even before its trial suspension
