Assembly Calls For Re–Establishment Of School Farms

ANAMBRA State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Basic Education to enforce the establishment of school farms in Primary and Secondary Schools for Agricultural Science practicals.

The House passed the resolution following a motion sponsored to that effect by the member representing Ogbaru II Constituency, Sir Somtoochukwu Udeze.

Explaining the motion, Udeze noted that Governor Obiano has encouraged food production through different policies and programmes and the establishment of the school farms will compliment his efforts as it will rekindle the interest of students in Agriculture.

The member representing Orumba North Constituency, Hon. Emeka Aforka while supporting the motion, said if implemented by the Executive Arm of Government thr farms will serve as a wonderful source of inspiration, motivation and encouragement to Ndi Anambra as well as guarantee food sufficiency in the state.

On his part, the member representing Awka North Constituency, Hon. John Nwokoye, who regretted that many youths roaming the streets in search of white collar jobs have no interest in agriculture because they were not exposed to it on time, described the motion as a step in the right direction.

In his contribution, the member representing Idemili South constituency, Dr. Timothy Ifedioramma maintained that the introduction of agricultural practice in education curriculum will curb unemployment among youths.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor described the motion as apt and read out the resolution to the House, while the lawmakers supported it through a voice vote.
