Career Day: Professionals Storm Maris Schools As Mentors

Professionals in different fields of life on Friday, stormed Maris Schools, Amachai, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State to advise pupils and students on different career plans.

Most of those who spoke at this year’s Career Day of the school include Engr. Okeoghene Owhe, a retired Director in Federal Ministry of Works, Elder Sunny Edoge, a renowned sports administrator who retired from the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr Sam Ijeh, the immediate past General Manager of The Pointer Newspaper and Mr Uzo Uzama Uzo, an international Hockey Player.

Also, renowned Nollywood Actor, Mr Kenneth Nwachukwu and Mr James Igbi who retired as Deputy Director, Education and Social Services, the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, spoke at the occasion.

They advised pupils and students to take their studies serious as education is the bedrock for a better future.

Engr. Okeoghene said, “I am happy to be here; all of us were once at this age in life when we were taught two times one and that was the beginning of our venture into engineering.

“Engineering is important, engineers construct roads and buildings like this, the engineer plan and construct, engineers are also involved in farming and they are called agricultural engineers, so, in almost all aspects of life, you have engineers.

“The type of knowledge that engineers have is such that people will always look for you, so, as a student, take your studies very serious.”

Elder Edoge at the occasion, thanked the management and staff of Maris Schools for ensuring proper grooming of the pupils and students, asserting that it was important to keep the pupils and students informed and prepare them for future challenges.

He said, “at a time, I was like you, young and energetic and as I was growing up, I didn’t even know what is called career, so, you people are very lucky to be in Maris Schools where the management and staff are planning for a better future for you.

“I want to encourage you to focus on what you want to be and always obey your teachers and at the end, you will have reasons to thank God.

“Education is number one; I worked in the sports industry as a Sports Administrator for several years and it is good to be positive in your reasoning, take your education serious.”

Mr Igbi took time to recite nursery rhymes with the children and urged them to be courageous.

“Whatever field you want to go into, don’t look down on yourself, be confident and be focused, do not forget too to be prayerful,” Mr Igbi said.

To Mr. Uzor pupils and students of Maris Schools “should be interested in sports,” observing that, “there is no career that is useless but you must take your studies very serious. “

Mr Ijeh stated that career choice is very important but such should no be a limitation to the individuals but widen their horizon, disclosing that though he studied Physical and Health Education in the university, he retired as a journalist, where he rose to the peak of the profession as the General Manager of The Pointer Newspapers.

“Don’t let your career limit you, whatever you are, remain focused,” he said.

Nollywood actor, Nwachukwu reeled out the movies that he has featured in, more than three hundred movies and he advised the pupils and students of Maris Schools to be committed to their studies.

He thanked the management and staff of Maris Schools for their commitment to providing conducive learning environment for the children and also, preparing them for future challenges.

The Nollywood Actor called for the establishment of Guidance and Counseling unit in the school.

The Headmistress of Maris Nursery School, Mrs. Delphine Jikeme, in a brief remarks, thanked those who came to give talks on career to the pupils and students, observing that they have made marks in their chosen careers and their visit to Maris Schools would inspire the pupils and students to bring out their best while working for a better future.

The pupils and students put up spectacular displays about their knowledge of their chosen careers to the admiration of those who witnessed the event.
