Anambra oil struggle leaves communities neglected despite loss of life

Sir Arinze Awogu, National Coordinator of the Ikemba Front, a pro-APC group in Anambra State, has decried the lack of development in Anambra’s oil-producing communities despite significant sacrifices made to establish the State’s oil-producing status.

He highlighted the loss of life during the struggle, paying tribute to former Governor Willie Obiano and others who perished in the effort.

Awogu, a former political advisor to Governor Obiano and caretaker committee chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, accused foreign oil companies of illicitly extracting oil, labeling it as originating from Delta and Rivers States, while ignoring the plight of the actual owners in Anambra.

He stated that attempts to compromise him and others involved in the struggle failed.

He expressed deep disappointment that the oil-bearing communities of Ogbaru Local Government Area, particularly Oguaniocha and Oguikpele, have received no tangible benefits and he cited the following examples of neglect:

The disappearance of the Igwe Oliver Nnaji of Oguaniocha, which remains unsolved by the State government.

Severe water erosion in Oguikpele, exacerbated by oil extraction, with no government intervention.

Impassable roads, including the Osomala-Obeagwe-Akili-Ogidi-Oguikpele and Osomala-Umunankwo-Oguaniocha roads, despite the significant oil revenue generated and lack of electricity in Oguaniocha and Oguikpele.

Awogu questioned the State government’s commitment to the well-being of these communities, emphasizing the stark contrast between the billions in oil revenue and the dire conditions on the ground.

He highlighted the inclusive nature of the earlier struggle, noting that even individuals from outside Anambra, such as a Special Assistant to the Governor from Imo State, participated.

He expressed confidence that the APC would be even more inclusive and ensure the communities receive their due.
