A gully erosion at Amachai, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, has cut off the Okpanam/Akwukwu-Igbo road and buildings around the area are about to cave in.

Newsden reporter who visited the area observed that while the road to Akwukwu-Igbo has fully caved in, there were signs that buildings around the area may collapse into the pit any time soon if nothing is done urgently.

Engr. Emmanuel Okeke, stated that the  volume of water from Issele-Azagba and Okpanam flows into the pit.

“The volume of water is too much, we have tried our best to manage it but, we are overwhelmed.

“We are soliciting for government intervention; there is nothing we can do again as individuals; the road is cut off.

“If the Igwogwo pit is properly managed, it will generate a lot of revenue to government; it has spring water which made it to be the source Anwai River.”

Pastor Alex Balogun, a resident of the area observed that the fear of the erosion site has made him to be restrictive in sending children on errands.

He called for urgent palliative measures before the erosion becomes more devastating to the people of the area.

Due to fear, some of those who have projects in the area have abandoned them while those who have alternatives, have moved out.
