Flooding: Ocha Brigade urges Anambra residents to keep drainage channels clear

The Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ocha Brigade) has issued a stern warning to residents of Anambra State, particularly those in the Onitsha metropolis, to refrain from dumping waste into drainage systems, as the State braces for potential flooding.

Mr. Ejike Odife, a coordinator of the Ocha Brigade in Onitsha, delivered the warning while speaking with journalists during a tour of Upper Iweka.

He reminded the public that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast significant flooding this year a warning echoed by the Anambra State Ministry of Environment.

Mr. Odife expressed concern over the persistent indiscriminate dumping of refuse, including used cartons, sachet water nylons, plastic bottles, and waste papers, which he said are clogging drainage channels and worsening flood risks.

He particularly blamed unlicensed street traders who conduct business directly on top of gutters and water channels. According to him, many of these traders carelessly dispose of their waste after business hours, leading to blocked drains and increased government expenditure on waste removal and de-silting efforts.

“It’s unacceptable for traders and residents to keep dumping waste in our gutters. These blockages are preventable, and they cost the government millions each month to clear,” Mr. Odie said.

He urged both residents and visitors in Onitsha to make use of mobile waste bins provided by the Ocha Brigade at key locations, warning that violators may be penalized under Anambra’s environmental laws.

Mr. Odife also commended Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for formally establishing the Ocha Brigade through legislation and for his ongoing commitment to improving the state’s environmental standards.

He described the Governor as a “God-sent leader” and prayed for his continued wisdom and good health.

He further applauded the Director of Ocha Brigade, Chief Celestine Anere, for his leadership and consistent support in promoting environmental hygiene across the State.
