Urhobo College emerged victorious at year 2025 edition of the Zenith Bank/Delta State Principal’s Cup.

The football match played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on Thursday, saw Urhobo College, Effurun beating Ogbe Ijaw Grammar School, Ogbe-Ijaw 2-1 to emerge victorious.

With the victory, Urhobo College went home with a brand new bus and N2 million while Ogbe-Ijaw got N1.5 million.

Speaking at the occasion, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, congratulated Urhobo College for winning the trophy.

The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, disclosed that the competition was part of his MORE Agenda, “which focuses on youth development and giving every young person in Delta State, a chance to grow and succeed.”

He continued, “We believe that education goes beyond
the classroom; the lessons you learn on the field: teamwork, discipline and
perseverance are the same lessons that lead to success in life.

“I am happy and proud to stand before you today at the grand finale of the 2025 Zenith Delta Principal’s Cup Football Competition.

“We thank Almighty God for bringing us together safely and for the success of this year’s tournament.

“Today, we have seen more than a football match; we have seen talent, teamwork, discipline and the true spirit of sportsmanship.

“The thrilling contest between Urhobo College, Effurun and Ogbe-ljaw Grammar School, Ogbe-ljaw, has been a joy to watch; you have both shown great skill, courage, determination and I am proud of you all.

“To the winners, I warmly congratulate you, on your victory; you have worked hard and earned this victory; celebrate it with joy but also with humility, remember that true champions remain disciplined and focused even after the applause fades.

“To the runners-up, you have given your very best; reaching the finals is no small feat, it takes dedication, focus and hard work, qualities you have clearly demonstrated throughout this competition.

‘To the teams that placed third and fourth, you also fought bravely and represented your schools with honour, I congratulate and commend you all for your excellent performances and sportsmanship.

“To all our young athletes, keep training hard, listen to your coaches and never forget your studies; education is the solid foundation for every great dream.

“I am also pleased to announce that the Delta State Government will soon start a special programme to discover and train talented players discovered
from competitions like this.

“Our aim is to help you develop your skills and prepare for opportunities at state, national, and international levels.”

The Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs Rose Ezewu in an address, said championship is a classroom supportive event that continues to promote unity, discipline and excellence among secondary students across the State.

She noted that, since inception, the tournament has grown and impacted on ethnic groups football and has groomed students who have represented Delta State, and Nigeria in international competitions.

Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor was among dignitaries who watched the match.
