The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday, charged Local Government Chairmen in the state to lay more emphasis on the development of communities in their domains.
He made the call at the inauguration of Alihame Market and the 1.15 kilometre Abude Street with dual drainage in Agbor, constructed by Ika South Local Government.
Governor Oborevwori, who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, stated that the essence of having the third tier of government was to ensure that “good governance gets closer” to the people at the grassroots.
“Local Government Council Chairmen should concentrate their developmental projects at the communities, if possible, 99 percent of the projects that you execute should be for people at the grassroots.
“The projects that we are executing today, the ultra-modern Alihame Market, Alihame and 1.15 kilometer road with dual drainage on Abude Street, Agbor, executed by Hon. Jerry Ehiwario-led Ika South Local Government Council are grassroots projects.
“These projects are clear evidence that Hon. Ehiwario is a politician who is working in tandem with his people because, politics is grassroot; at the end of the day we will come back to our people in the communities.”
The Governor thanked Ika South Local Government Chairman for executing the projects within few months of being in office.
He urged the people to make good use of the projects, asserting, “I plead with the people that will use these projects, to use them very well; they should be maintained.
“Maintenance is key to ensuring that government facilities stand the test of time; we don’t want to come here after a year and see that everywhere is uninhabitable due to indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
“Maintenance is very key; if you maintain the facilities, I am sure you will be encouraging the government, both at the state and federal levels to do more for you as this is a M.O.R.E. government.
“I want to use this opportunity to plead that you should continue to support our government, the Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration, because, we are doing well for Deltans,” the Governor said.
Hon. Ehiwario said that the projects were executed based on the needs of the people.
He commended Governor Oborevwori’s administration for providing the enabling environment for local governments to work according to the dictates of the people.
Highpoint of the occasion was the cutting of the ceremonial tapes to signal the inauguration of the projects.
Some of those who witnessed the event include Hon. Marilyn Okowa-Daramola, Chief Sunday Onoriode and Sir Christopher Osakwe.
