ISSELE-UKU DIOCESE @ 50: The Journey So Far

“The Diocese of Issele-Uku was created on the 5th day of July 1973, from Archdiocese of Benin City with Most Revd. Anthony O. Gbuji as the first Diocesan Bishop.

Situated in Delta State, the Diocese is comprised of six local Government areas, namely; Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Ika North-east and Ika-South.

This area covered by Issele-Uku Diocese is largely populated by the Anioma people of Delta State. The total population of the Diocese is two million, eight hundred and five thousand, three hundred (2,850,300).

While the Catholic population is eight hundred and fifty thousand (850,000), with one hundred and seven (107) parishes, two hundred and forty-three (243) diocesan priests, one hundred six (106) women religious, and sixty (60) major seminarians.

The local Ordinary is Most Revd. Michael O. Elue. Currently, the Diocese is pastorally divided into five (5) regions: Issele-Uku region, Asaba region, Agbor Region, Umunede Region and Ogwashi-Uku region” (2023 Liturgical Calendar of the Diocese of Issele-Uku).

Today, the Bishop Most Revd. Michael Odogwu Elue will lead us during the one hour adoration between 4-5pm at the Cathedral of St. Paul Issele-Uku. Lord hear our prayers.

The grand finale will be on this SATURDAY 8th July 2023 at the Cathedral with the Holy Mass at 10am. We are as a particular Church remains ever grateful to God for the gift of the pastoral life of our Diocese.

We are thankful to the different pastoral agents, clergy and lay (living and dead) for their pastoral imputes.

Through the intercession of Our Lady—Mother of Perpetual Help, let us come together to celebrate the missionary activities of the Diocese as a people of God for these 50 years.
