Athletes who will represent Rivers State at the forthcoming National Sports Festival (NSF) are set for a record-breaking reward if they win medals for the State at the ‘Gateway Games’.

Consequently, the State Government has announced unprecedented cash rewards for its athletes competing at the 22nd NSF, the Gateway Games 2024, to inspire and reward excellence.

This was made known during a high-energy pre-departure rally at the Alfred Diette-Spiff Sports Complex and the University of Port Harcourt training camp by the State Administrator, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) on Thursday.

“Rivers State believes in you. His Excellency is investing in your victory because you represent the pride, strength, and future of our state.

“This is the most generous reward scheme in Nigeria—now go out there, dominate the competition, and bring glory to Rivers State!,” he said.

The Administrator also charged the athletes to seize the moment, emphasising that the state would stand firmly behind them.

He said, “You’ve trained hard; now it’s time to shine. Be champions on the field and ambassadors of excellence.”

Dr Inyingi Brown, Acting Head of Service, who reinforced the message, also urged Team Rivers to make history.

“No other state is offering what Rivers State is giving you. This is your time—go out and claim your victory!,” she said.

Also, Juliana Masi, Head Press
Office of the Secretary to the State Government, said: “With rigorous training behind them and the nation’s highest rewards ahead, Team Rivers is set to blaze a trail at the festival, taking place from May 16–30, 2025, in Ogun State.

“The message is clear: Rivers State means business—and its athletes are ready to win big.”
