The Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Bola Tinubu, has sanctioned a major infrastructure initiative for the deployment of 4,000 new telecom towers across Nigeria’s underserved communities.
This decision aims to significantly expand digital access and promote economic inclusion for citizens currently lacking connectivity.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, confirmed the approval, which followed a joint memo from the Ministries of Digital Communications and Finance.
The project is specifically designed to serve the estimated 23 million Nigerians who are presently underserved by digital networks.
The Minister highlighted the dual impact of the project, stating that improved digital connectivity will be instrumental in strengthening national security and boosting commerce and economic activity within rural communities.
In addition to the digital infrastructure boost, the FEC also approved the establishment of service centers dedicated to agricultural mechanization across the six geopolitical zones. Both measures are aligned with the government’s recently adopted medium-term expenditure framework.
