DELTA State government is set to embark on measures to check the Igwogwo erosion menace, Commissioner for Works in the state, Engineer Noel Omordon, has said.
Addressing journalists at the erosion site on Tuesday afternoon, Engr. Omordon accompanied by his Ministry of Environment counterpart, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu and the Special Assistant, Media to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Comrade Fidelis Egugbo, stated that the situation at the site deserves urgent attention.
He said, “we are here to assess the ecological damage at the Igwogwo erosion site.
“We learnt about this site few days ago and it is unfortunate that it got to this stage when it got close to residential buildings before our attention was drawn to the site.
“This erosion site is quite a novel one because it is very deep; we have a lot of erosion sites in the state but this one is very deep.”
Asked how far the government will go working on the site which has cut off the major road linking Okpanam and Akwukwu-Igbo and has become a great threat to lives and property in the area, Engr. Omordon said it is only Governor Okowa can decide on that but assured that works will be done at the site.
“The job is massive and our Governor is interested, he will decide and the nature of job to be done.
“The Commissioner for Environment is here with me and we will have to bring engineers from the Ministry to look at the site, this is massive but, the governor has said that we should take measures to secure to buildings and the roads, unfortunately, the major road has caved in; we will work to moderate the erosion.”
Commissioner for Environment in the state, Chief Asiuwhu who had earlier, visited the site, assured that government will intervene.
Egugbo in a chat, said, Okpanam as part of the capital territory is getting deserved attention from Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration.
He urged the people of the area to remain prayerful and believe that with the interest of government in the project, there will be palliative measures to check the erosion menace.
