The Nigerian International Coastal Border Platform has been tasked by the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, to proffer solutions to disputes along coastal boundaries.

Sir Onyeme made the call on Friday at the inaugural summit of the Nigerian International Coastal Border Platform held at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Deputy Governor expressed hope that the platform will also, strengthen border governance, disclosing that the administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has “made deliberate efforts to discourage conflict in areas affected by boundary disputes with neighboring states.”

He noted that there was a need to tap the benefits of the blue economy, especially in sustainable marine resource management – fisheries, tourism, and coastal infrastructure.

“To fully tap into the potential of the blue economy, we must confront the pressing challenges that come with it, particularly piracy, smuggling, and other maritime crimes that threaten national security and economic growth.

“This platform gives us a chance to deepen cooperation, improve coordination, and promote a united front in managing Nigeria’s coastal borders.

“Through open dialogue and shared commitment, we can unlock the full value of our coastal resources while protecting the lives and livelihoods of our people,” the Deputy Governor said.

Declaring the summit opened, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, and the Chairman of Nigerian International Coastal Border Platform, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, noted that there are lots of challenges facing Nigeria’s coastal states, which must be addressed.

Some of those who spoke at the summit, including the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi, Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Director-General of National Boundary Commission, Surv. Adamu Adaji, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogana, Prof. Enefiok Essien, SAN, among others, listed several benefits of effective management of the coastal border of the country.

Nigeria’s coastline is 853 kilometers long and has Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States are coastal states.
