The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says every success recorded on highways depended largely on the knowledge, attitude, competence and professionalism of its Marshals.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said this at the opening of a two-day capacity building for Marshals and Route Marshals in Zone 5 comprising Edo, Delta and Anambra sector commands.

The training has the theme “Repositioning Marshals for Effective Service Delivery”.

Mohammed represented by ACM Felix Therman, noted that the programme was not merely another training exercise; but a strategic investment in the corps’ most valuable asset, its personnel.

According to him, every success we record on our highways depends largely on the knowledge, attitude, competence and professionalism of our Marshals, who remain the first and most visible point of contact between the corps and the motoring public.

“To reposition marshals for effective service delivery, therefore, is to strengthen the very foundation upon which our operational effectiveness and public confidence rest.

“I am particularly pleased that this initiative is being implemented as a corps-wide programme that will progressively cover all 12 zonal commands.

“This deliberate approach demonstrates management’s commitment to ensuring that professional development, operational standards and the benefits of this repositioning exercise reach our personnel across the entire country.

“Our 2026 corporate strategic goals place strong emphasis on operational excellence, professionalism, institutional integrity, improved service delivery, digital transformation and sustained reduction in road traffic crashes.

“These objectives cannot be achieved without a workforce that is properly trained, ethically grounded, motivated and responsive to the changing demands of road safety management.”

The corps marshal added that the training had been structured to strengthen participants understanding of the FRSC Establishment Act, operational procedures, traffic management, emergency response, emotional intelligence, ethical conduct and public engagement.

“As frontline personnel, you are not only law enforcement operatives; you are ambassadors of the corps. Every interaction with a motorist either strengthens or diminishes public confidence in our institution.

“Repositioning marshals for effective service delivery must therefore begin with a repositioning of our mindset, attitude and approach to duty. I urge you to make professionalism your identity, discipline your culture, integrity your compass, and service your defining hallmark.

“The true FRSC marshal must be firm without being oppressive, courteous without compromising enforcement, and compassionate without sacrificing professionalism.

“I expect every participant to approach this programme with an open mind, humility and a genuine determination to improve. Participate actively, learn from the facilitators, share experiences, ask relevant questions and embrace the practical sessions.

“More importantly, ensure that the knowledge acquired here translates into better decisions, improved conduct and measurable results when you return to your respective commands,” he said.

Mohammed also said that repositioning must not end in the classroom; as it must be reflected in patrol, enforcement and the way personnel respond to emergencies, engage the public and discharge their responsibilities.

“This training also provides an important platform for standardising operational practices across the corps.

“Regardless of whether a marshal serves in an urban centre, rural community or major highway corridor, Nigerians should encounter the same high standard of professionalism, courtesy, fairness and efficiency.

“Effective service delivery requires consistency in our procedures, discipline in our conduct and responsiveness to the realities of the different environments in which we operate,” he further said.

In his remarks, the Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO) in charge of the zone, ACM Cyril Mathew, commended the corps marshal for yet another feat.

According to Mathew, the training is the first of its kind in the annals of history of the FRSC.

He admonished participants to reciprocate the gesture by giving rapt attention to the resource persons and strictly adhering to the core values of the corps.

Similarly, the Edo Sector Commander of the corps, CC Preye Bedbord, in his remarks expressed gratitude to the CM and management for creating the platform for the marshals and prayed for its continuity.
